RICHARD OETINGER FIRE STATION GALLERY

richard oetinger

This is my first try at building a station to display my 1/34 scale rigs. The station is actualy built to 1/32 scale (quite a bit easier to convert from full size). It is built in a style ment to fit into a rural setting. The type of station that would be at home in the Texas country side, or a Colorado mountain valley.

The building measures 18 inches x 13 1/2 inches. That would be 48' x 36' full size (approx 1728 square feet). The two front bay doors are 12' wide and 10' tall. The side door has been changed from 8' x 10' as pictured, to 10" x 10". I plan to add interior walls for a day/bed room area.

The station is constructed using balsa wood. The framing is on 16" scale centers and the siding is cut from 1/32" thick sheet balsa. The siding was cut into 3/8" wide strips, and represents a 12" lap siding. I don't know how I'm going to finish the roof...I would like to maybe do a cedar shake roof, or a standard 3 tab shingle roof. I have made a few shingles using 180 grit sandpaper. The look is good, but there is about 290 square inches of roof. That's 10" x 14 1/2" each side. I wonder how many scale shingles it will take?

The roof is removable. This is done to help show future interior details, and of course the rigs. The end trusses are a part of the front and rear walls. The remander of the roof assembly will be a single removable section. The prototype sign is for a Civil Defense Station, but that is easy to change. I need an idea on how to make working bay doors. This represents about 15 hours of work so far.

These photos show the station with the roof in place, and removed (to show the interior construction detail). Since these photos were taken I have added lights to the project. There are two (for now) 1.5v 25ma lights inside the bay area, and one light near the top of the front gable. The lights are wired using 24 ga. wire, and are powered by 2 AAA batteries. I will be adding some shots of the lighting work soon.

I have started work on the bay doors. I will be attempting to copy a solid pivot type door. This will be the simplist way to do the project. The removable roof complicates this a bit, but I think it will be worth it. At this point I have approx. 35 hours of work in the station at a cost of $50, more or less.
